I mean, it's not Carlisle as in I'm actually answering you right now, so if you're trying to reply to me at the second, you should probably save your breath because I'm not really here. This is some kind of a recording of my voice, but this is my communicator. I'm going to assume these devices are as common here as they are in other places — not my world, but others, ones more technologically advanced than where I come from— so if you'd like to leave me a message, then you may do so here, or er...

Guess that'd make sense. Looks bad enough when you puke up that black stuff just from the healing you do -- it'd probably look worse if it started coming out of more orifices than just your mouth if something went awry. [Just saying.]

[He was about to point out how it already does, but he then realizes more disgusting implications of what Rey's saying, and decides he'll pass.]

Yes, it would be a problem. As it is, I am teaching both a magical skeleton and his child... friend of some sort the fine art of healing, and perhaps they can be of assistance to the more foolhardy citizens.

[A wise choice.

[There's a pause on her end. Then, flatly:] Ah. Assuming that their names happen to be Sans and Frisk?

[Since there's only one skeleton she knows in the city, and Frisk might have made up with him. Or something. Plus healing seemed like a thing they'd be interested in beyond the lifespan of Hope's blessing.]

Er. Yes, actually. The former asked for tutelage, and the latter just showed up and wouldn't leave.

[Kids.]

[Scoff.] Surprised he even bothered asking.

[She doesn't even try to hide the momentary disdain she has for Sans at the present, but the other is a different story.]

Frisk is a good enough kid, though. Think they'd try to put those abilities to good use.

[He notes that disdain in her tone, but says nothing. He can't say he hasn't done the same when interacting with the skeleton.]

They seem persistent, if nothing else.

[Determined.]

[Woo hoo, someone who gets it.]

Better persistent than the alternative.

[She's thinking of their impeccable habit for thinking that they are best off "erasing" themselves from people's memories. Something which Rey was not all that happy to hear about when they attempted to wander off into the Silent Hill Zone to die.]

Yes, an alternative that Sans seems to embody from time to time.

[It must have been something tremendous to convince a lazy, magical skeleton to actually seek his tutelage in such a taxing craft, but as for what that something is, Carlisle cannot say he knows all the details. He prefers to keep others at arm's length, after all.]

I suppose I could give proper lessons to Frisk, if you think the endeavor would be worth it.

Think it would. They're a good kid, and am pretty sure they'd use it to do... well, better by others.

[A sentiment that Carlisle might have something in common with, given how determined he was to help Rey back when she had no reason to seek it out.]

Hm.

[He catches what she's getting at. She might hear the sound of a pen scratching across paper in the background of the call, the telltale sound that Carlisle is making notes.]

Are they a better child than your other one?

[There's a bit of a pause on Rey's end, and then:]

He's gone. Haven't heard from him in a while.

[She doesn't let loss get to her so much, though. It sucks, losing people, but that's just how life works. It's no different back home than it is here, save for how the exit works.]

But yes, Frisk is a bit more well-mannered in that case.

... Oh.

[There's another stifled sigh on his end.]

It seems we've lost many recently. I'm sorry.

[It sucks, and she's hardly looking on the bright side of things, but she's surprisingly level-toned for the subject:]

No more than however many people am used to losing. Don't need a magic door for that.

Have you lost many people, Miss Rey?

Have been around for nearly a century and was made for war. Losing people is a thing that happens a lot.

Ah, I forget you are, er... some kind of construct. I could feel it when healing you. Inorganic parts and whatnot.

That is what you are, right?

[Rey doubts that trying to explain how synthetics are made and work won't yield much fruit here.]

That all you could sense from that, though? Just the inorganic stuff?

[She's not a true pyromancer, and not a true construct. Just what is she, anyway?]

I could tell what parts of you are and are not human -- or whatever it is you are. I am no expert in constructs, though.

[She could almost laugh at "whatever it is you are", having heard and wondered that much of the time herself. While Rey knows what she was supposed to be, what she is is another story entirely.]

Do you think that factor would obstruct your abilities in some way?

[Asking because of reasons.]

[Or the other ones, as the unspoken question goes.]

That and the other thing you can do, making people do shit.

[On the plus side, she sounds more impartial to the subject of Carlisle's compulsion than others have been.]

[There's a quiet sort of sigh on his end, one that's probably as laced with shame as a sigh can get.]

I... I don't know, actually. I cannot heal constructs in the traditional sense. I'd need a Glyph of Mending, and even then, it would likely be unstable. And I don't know whether or not the, er... other thing would be affected, as I admittedly have not done much experimentation.

Didn't seem to have any adverse effects the last time you did your healing thing.

The reason for asking is because your... clone -- or whatever -- from a few months back attempted to try that little trick. At least, am pretty sure that it was trying to do.

[Rey refuses to dignify those doubles with pronouns, so "it" they are.]

No no, I mean I couldn't mend the inorganic parts of you. I mean, I could, but the energy re—

[And then he stops talking as his brain latches onto that next thing she said, even if he might have been talking over her just a bit.]

My— my what? What did you say? What is that you were saying just now?

[Rey is hardly concerned about the inorganic aspects of her makeup. They're pretty sturdy, and tend to mend on their own.

[However, it's pretty clear that last part is what has Carlisle's undivided attention now.]

Your clone. Double. That other you. Whatever. Was trying to give orders. Seemed confused when nothing was happening, and turned to use Shadow instead. That's what happened.

[It isn't that big of a deal to Rey, though there is some comfort in knowing that she isn't completely vulnerable to that sort of thing.]
